Sir Elton John Dismisses Retirement Rumours

Elton John has laughed off reports suggesting he is planning to retire from music after another round of shows.

Sir Elton took to social media to calm the fears of his fans after media outlets claimed he would be stepping out of the limelight next year (17).

In a post on Instagram on Saturday (03Dec16), Elton shared a photo of himself from the 1960s with longtime musical partner Bernie Taupin, and wrote: “Don’t believe what you read in the papers today. There is no truth to the rumors (sic) that I am planning to retire. In fact, I am looking forward to celebrating 50 years of collaborating with my partner-in-song, Bernie Taupin, next year.”

The Daily Mail reported the Candle in the Wind hitmaker was going to quit showbiz after his landmark 70th birthday in March (17). Sources told the newspaper Elton “has seen and done it all, and has nothing to prove”, and would take a permanent break in his relentless touring schedule and call it a day.

Retirement rumours have swirled around the father-of-two for months, after he appeared on The Graham Norton Show in February (16) and said he wanted to spend more time with his children Zachary, five, and Elijah, three, who he shares with husband David Furnish.

“I’m gradually going to wind down because I want to see my boys grow up,” he said at the time. “I mean, what’s the point of having children if you don’t spend time with them?”

The Rocket Man hitmaker is currently on the European leg of his Elton & His Band Tour, which will finish in Dubai on 15 December. He then jets off to Las Vegas on 28 December (16) to begin another two-month residency at the The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, before tour dates in the U.S. He’ll then return to the U.K. for gigs in June, before wrapping up his tour in Marbella, Spain in July (17).
