Skid Row have announced the departure of singer Johnny Solinger.

Early Monday, the told fans that Solinger, who had been fronting the band since 1999, had quit. Solinger released a statement explaining his departure:

I have decided to leave Skid Row to pursue my solo career. The past 15 years has been a great experience and I have appreciated the opportunity to be the lead singer in one of the most prominent bands of the 1990s and share stages with the likes of Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and KISS, performing in front of millions throughout the world. I wish Skid Row the best of luck in their future pursuits.

Skid Row founding member Snake Sabo released a statement saying “We had a lot of great times together and created a lot of great music. We wish him nothing but the best.”

That press release, which came out hours after the initial announcement by Solinger, also named a new lead singer for the group, Tony Harnell of TNT.

Harnell had recently left the Norwegian band for the third time. Skid Row guitarist Scotti Hill said “Tony’s experience, power and undeniable range made our decision an easy one” while drummer Rob Hammsersmith added “I believe this will be a great year for Skid Row. I’m looking forward for things to come.”

The band plans on going in the studio in the near future to record the third chapter of their United World Rebellion trilogy.

Harnell said of his new position “I’m so excited and honored to be a part of such a great band with an amazing legacy and legions of faithful fans! The guys and I have known each other for many years and this is such a natural fit. I look forward to getting out there and playing live together and being a part of making new music and creating our future together. It’s time to rock!”

Skid Row was formed in 1986 by Sabo, Rachel Bolan, Sebastian Bach, Scotti Hill and Rob Affuso. They’ve released a total of five studio albums and scored top ten hits with 18 and Life (1989 / #4) and I Remember You (1989 / #6).
