Slayer would like Jeff Hanneman’s funeral to be peaceful, asking fans to ignore the protests of the Westboro Baptist Church.
Like Wendy Dio before the funeral of Ronnie James Dio, the band would like the attendees to focus on the life of their late-guitarist and not on the circus outside the facility. In a statement, they said:
MESSAGE TO FANS:
Want to really piss off the Westboro Baptist Church at Jeff’s Memorial Celebration? Do exactly what Slayer members and family are going to do – totally ignore them. They don’t exist. And then come inside and celebrate Jeff’s life with us.
The ceremony is open to the public and is at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles today from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Hanneman died on May 2 at the age of 49.
