Slayer surprised fans in Los Angeles this week with the debut of their first new song in five years … ‘Implode’ and it is their first song in 28 years without producer Rick Rubin.
‘Impode’ was recorded early April at Henson Studios in Los Angeles by producer Terry Date and co-producer Greg Fidelman. Slayer say it is a “thankyou to fans” for their continued support.
The song is a passing of the torch with Slayer splitting with long-time producer Rick Rubin for the first time in 28 years. “Rick has played a huge role in our career, we’ve made some great albums with him,” said Slayer’s Tom Araya. “But today is a new day, record companies don’t play the kind of role they once did, and we really like the idea of going out on our own, connecting directly with our fans, and Nuclear Blast is fired up about taking on that challenge with us.”
Nuclear Blast label manager Gerardo Martinez was just a kid when the first Slayer record came out. “The prospect of helping Slayer take a leading role in the creative process surrounding their releases, projects and other cross-promotional opportunities is the ultimate honor for me, a metalhead who grew up in Los Angeles listening to Slayer. Nowhere in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that Nuclear Blast would be making history alongside one of the best bands in metal,” he said.
The album, set for release in early 2015, will be issued through Nuclear Blast Records.
The band has also confirmed Gary Holt will continue to play guitar for Slayer, standing in for Jeff Hanneman who died in May, 2013.
