Spirit if Akasha’, the movie honouring 40 years of the iconic surf flick ‘Morning Of The Earth’, will have its world premiere at the Sydney Festival on January 25.
‘Spirit of Akasha’ is a brand new Australian surfing movie mentored by ‘Morning of The Earth’ director Albe Falzon and produced by Australian filmmaker Andrew Kidman, who also features on the soundtrack with his band Windy Hill.
The new movie was filmed throughout the world in Australia, Hawaii, Bali, Tahiti, Mexico and Ireland. It features world champion surfers Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater and Beau Young have joined the new guard of Heath Joske, Harrison Roach, Ellis Ericson and Ace Buchan and Jon Jon Florence, alongside ‘soul surfers’ Fergal Smith, Joel & Kye Fitzgerald.
Like ‘Morning Of The Earth’, ‘Spirit Of Akasha’ treats the music as the narrator with every song played in its entirety, not background music to the vision.
Warner Music will release two new soundtracks on January 24.
The Spirit of Akaska soundtrack will feature the original songs composed and recorded by musicians with strong ties to the surfing community. It features songs by Xavier Rudd, Matt Corby, Angus Stone, Dirty Three, Brian Wilson and Atoms for Peace.
The album will be accompanied with a Morning Of The Earth Reimagined album featuring new versions of songs from the original movie by POND, Xavier Rudd, and Busby Marou.
“Being involved in the creative process of honouring Morning of the Earth in a modern way has been a wonderful experience. Listening to, and watching the offerings from the different musicians and filmmakers as they submitted their homages to Albert Falzon’s 1972 masterpiece, was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever been involved in,” Andrew Kidman said.
The worldwide premiere of ‘Spirit of Akasha’ is on at the Sydney Opera House on January 25 at 7pm.
