Spotify is about to test its ability to break an unknown act with the exclusive release of Sweden’s Cazzette.
Cazzette’s album will be the first Spotify move into music distribution.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Spotify will start to release the album in its 15-country territories including Australia next week.
Cazzette’s debut album will then be made available in three instalments, one month apart. The release will be promoted on Spotify’s landing page.
The exercise will test the potency for Spotify to break a band and will attempt to change the perception that music-streaming services like Spotify and Deezer have a negative effect in an artist’s ability to generate income.
When Mumford & Sons ‘Babel’ was released it was streamed over 8 million times in the first week on Spotify. It also sold 600,000 units that same week.
