Spotify reveals its picks for the top songs that are set to be the soundtrack of your summer, leading with three songs that are poised to be summer smashes in the UK.
The songs are ‘I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)’ from Jamie xx ft. Young Thug and Popcaan, ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ by The Weeknd and ‘This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like A MotherFucker’ by Maroon 5.
To compile the list, Spotify pooled collective expertise from its label relations and data insights teams, observing factors such as each track’s streaming activity and performance on Spotify’s viral chart*. Spotify also took the feel-good nature of a song into consideration as summer songs tend to be upbeat and contain positive lyrics.
Spotify’s summer standouts include a varied artist roster including dance music heavy hitters Zedd, Avicii, Major Lazer, and Jack Ü. Current chart toppers Nicki Minaj, OMI, Walk The Moon, Pitbull, Fetty Wap and Jason Derulo make the list, plus a new track from Carley Rae Jepsen, and newcomers-to-watch Alessia Cara, Leon Bridges, Grace, and Jess Glynne.
Spotify’s Songs of Summer 2015: Top 10
1. I Know There’s Gonna be (Good Times) – Jamie xx, Ft. Young Thug and Popcaan
Jamie xx’s solo sound is strikingly different from his work with the band, The xx, with this jam proving addictive from the jump. The Spotify team had this song on repeat as soon as the British producer dropped it, and it just topped Spotify’s viral charts.
2. Can’t Feel My Face – The Weeknd
The Weeknd has been on a hot streak of late with his Fifty Shades of Grey song Earned It passing 200 million streams on Spotify, and this funk-meets-MJ-throwback is bound to keep him in music lovers’ faces (and headphones) all summer long.
3. This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like A MotherFucker – Maroon 5
Sure, the explicit title suggests pain more than pleasure (maybe a sunburn reference?), but this in-your-face single off the reissue of Maroon 5’s hit album V is a bonafide summer anthem.
4. The Night Is Still Young – Nicki Minaj
This track is one of several success stories from rapper Nicki Minaj’s album The Pinkprint . The Night Is Still Young has been building rapidly since April and has been listened to over 30 million times on Spotify to date. Its catchy chorus is the perfect rallying cry for party-goers on hot summer nights.
5. Lean On – Major Lazer (ft. MØ and DJ Snake)
Racking up more than 185 million streams to date, Lean On has been a chart topper in several countries around the world for a number of weeks. Major Lazer, a Diplo side project, lets Danish singer MØ take the lead on this dancehall-inflected song, and it’s on track to keep revving through summer.
6. Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn remix) ‘ OMI
Cheerleader was originally released in 2012, but this remix by German DJ Felix Jaehn has taken off with listeners from Europe to New Zealand and now in the U.S. Jamaican artist OMI blends horns with elements of calypso and reggae in this feel-good song that’s impossible to frown to.
7. Talking Body – Tove Lo
Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo blew up last year with a remix of her song Habits (Stay High), and listeners have taken to Talking Body (which is as steamy as Lo is sassy) with equal enthusiasm. The track is Los second to be released from her 2014 album Queen Of The Clouds.
8. Good Thing – Sage the Gemini ft. Nick Jonas
This track spikes most on Spotify on the weekends; an indicator it’s getting traction as a party song. Nick Jonas croons his way brilliantly through slick synth beats courtesy of Swedish producer Ilya, giving Good Thing the potential to break out in the coming months.
9. Beautiful Now – Zedd ft. Jon Bellion
Every summer needs a good club banger, and Beautiful Now fits the bill. On the latest single to be released off Russian-German DJ Zedd’s sophomore album True Colors, singer Jon Bellion promises to ‘light up the sky.’
10. Here – Alessia Cara
A self-described ‘anti-social pessimist’, 18-year-old Alessia Cara’s debut single Here might not be a pro-party jam, but begs to be heard. It’s been popping on Spotify’s viral chart for weeks, an indication that listeners are sharing it with their friends. This Canadian singer-songwriter is going places.
