Madonna has called for “respect” in light of the Paris shootings.
Yesterday at least two masked gunmen stormed the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing ten editorial staff and two police officers. A further five were left in a critical condition.
It’s believed to have been a terror attack in response to controversial cartoons published by the magazine, which referenced the Muslim prophet Mohammed.
“We must respect AlL religions! But we must also RESPECT human life!! Killing in the name of G*D is man’s idea not G*D’s!!!!#livingforlove #rebelheartmadonna (sic)” Madonna wrote on her Instagram page.
The hashtag #JeSuisCharlie, French for I am Charlie, quickly picked up popularity on the social networking site and on Twitter. Model Cara Delevingne also weighed in on the tragedy.
“Everyone should have freedom to express themselves and not fear for their lives #dayofsorrow #jesuischarlie #freedomofspeech (sic)” she posted.
The suspects fled after the attack but a manhunt is underway and arrests have been made.
“I am heartbroken by the loss of life and attack on freedom of expression. #JeSuisCharlie (sic),” actress Julianne Moore tweeted.
Elijah Wood took to Twitter, posting: “My thoughts are with the victims and their families in Paris. #CharlieHebdo #JeSuisCharlie (sic).”
One Direction star Harry Styles also tweeted, adding how saddened he was by the events.
“Sad to hear about what happened in France today. Thinking of everyone .x (sic),” he posted.
