Stereophonics front man Kelly Jones caught up with Absolute Radio Breakfast Show host Christian O’Connell backstage at the bands intimate show for War Child and Absolute Radio.
Music-News.com were there too check out our review here. War Child offers life-changing support to the most vulnerable children whose families, communities and schools have been torn apart by war.
And Absolute Radio were on hand today to exclusively reveal that Stereophonics will be headlining The Isle of Wight Festival on Friday 10th June 2016. Absolute Radio are the official radio partner for the festival and broadcast from the island each year with exclusive artist interviews and live, uninterrupted stage sets from the star studded line-up. With the news fiercely kept under wraps until now Kelly told Christian just how excited the guys are in the anticipation to the announcement and revealed that a ‘Fan Stealing’ strategy will be in full force.
Kelly said “The conversation went, ‘Would you like to play’, and we were like, ‘Yeah, yeah, no worries’, and then all of a sudden we’re headlining, so there you go.
“The last time we did it I wore a ridiculous white suit thinking it was the right thing to do but I won’t be doing that next year. I’m looking forward to it, I like going there. I had to go of the boat last time, the captain let me wear his hat and honk the horn. That’s as safe as I get really, the boys don’t trust me in the car but the boat has plenty of room either side.”
Kelly reveals the band’s clever ‘Fan Stealing’ strategy “When you’re starting out, on your first and second record festivals are a brilliant place to steal other people’s fans and we stole quite a lot of people’s fans and it was great and then you move up the bill and then you do your own thing.”
“And it works both ways – now when we’re playing gigs and we’re on the bill with people like George Ezra and Ellie Goulding on their first and second records and then we try to steal their fans as well because they’re 16 and 17. Basically we just keep stealing people really.”
“At the Isle of Wight Festival we’ll be stealing fans, we’re going to steal some Queen fans.”
Kelly talks about how comfortable the band is after all these years. “I think as a band we’re more comfortable now than we’ve probably ever been really, I think we’re all comfortable in how we play and stuff like that and the camaraderie between the band is really strong so we tend to not go in and make an album anymore we just go in to the studio and make lots of songs and then edit it down after to make an album out of it. So we don’t really put too much pressure on ourselves, try not to think about it too much really, just see what comes out.”
