For the second time, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell have won a major theater award for their new musical, Bright Star.
The duo took home the Outstanding Music trophy on Sunday night at the Drama Desk Awards, the last of the honors for the year leading up to next Sunday’s Tonys. They did not, however, repeat their win for Best Musical which they took last week at the Outer Circle Awards, losing to Shuffle Along.
This will, in all likelihood, be the end of the road for Martin and Brickell’s honors. The Broadway phenomenon Hamilton was not eligible for the Outer Circle or Drama Desk Awards because it was nominated last year during its off-Broadway run. That is not the case for the Tonys which only honors Broadway shows.
