Supertramp’s album Crime of the Century is forty years old this year.
On December 9, they will celebrate the milestone with the release of a 2-CD or 3-Vinyl LP set of the original album plus an live concert from the era.
Crime of the Century was the band’s fourth album and contained such standards as Bloody Well Right, Dreamer and the title track. Originally released in 1974, the album peaked at number 38 on the U.S. and 4 on the U.K. Albums, eventually being certified gold in both countries. It’s biggest success, though, was in Canada where it sold over 1 million copies, being certified diamond.
The album had a prestigious life after its original release, being the first release by the audiophile label Mobile Fidelity in 1977 and, in 1984, A&M made it one of the first releases in their Audio Master Plus line.
The 40th Anniversary Edition includes the original album, remastered by Ray Staff at Air Studios, and a second disc with their 1975 show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The live set was mixed from the original broadcast tapes on a night when they played Crime of the Century in its entirety along with tracks from their upcoming album, Crisis? What Crisis?
A 24-page booklet of photographs includes a new essay by Phil Alexander of Mojo Magazine and interviews with Dougie Thomson, John Helliwell, Ken Scott, Bob Siebenberg, Roger Hodgson, and 1973-1983 Supertramp manager Dave Margereson.
