The identity behind the Tangerine Kitty viral-hit ‘Dumb Ways To Die’ has been revealed.
Tangerine Kitty is Ollie McGill from The Cat Empire and Emily Lubitz of Tinpan Orange.
The pair worked on the song through ad agency McCann Group for Melbourne’s Metro Trains.
In the past 5 days the video for the song has over 8 million YouTube views. UPDATE: Tangerine Kitty generated 3 million Youtube views yesterday (November 20).
“I’m kind of overwhelmed to tell you the truth,” Ollie said. “I’ve never dreamed of something I’ve written going viral like this. It’s gone beyond the desired effect, which was ambitious to start out with. It’s mad – I don’t know when it will stop.”
He said it was a fast song to write. “The initial tune came very quickly. I was up late one night after a party and picked up my guitar and out came the chorus. Then it was a matter of ”tweaking” late into the night over six weeks between tours.”
So now its back to work with The Cat Empire for Ollie. Expect the new album from The Cat Empire next May. Emily is currently touring with her band Tinpan Orange in support of their new album ‘Over The Sun’.
