Tex Perkins Given Extended Gaol Time

Tex Perkins ‘Far From Folsom’ tour has sold out the first date at Melbourne’s Old Melbourne Gaol and a second show has gone on sale for the following night, October 29.

Tex Perkins and the Tennessee Four with Rachael Tidd will perform the songs of Johnny Cash in decommissioned gaols across Australia starting October 7 in Darwin’s Fannie Bay Gaol.

Old Melbourne Gaol in Russell Street closed in July 1929. The Gaol held and was where bushranger Ned Kelly was executed. 133 prisoners, including series killer Frederick Deeming, were executed at the gaol between 1845 and 1929.

The gaol is now a museum displaying the death masks of the executed criminals. Until 1978 Ned Kelly’s skull was also on display before it was stolen. Ned Kelly was executed at the prison in November 1880.

The building was added to the National Trust in 1957 and was opened to the public as a museum in 1972.
