The Descendants Have Their First Hit In 39 Years

The punk rock band The Descendents were formed in 1977 and released their first album in 1982, but it wasn’t until 1996 that they charted for the first time on the Billboard 200 when Everything Sucks went to 132.

Their next album, Cool to Be You, didn’t come out for eight years and only made it to 143.

That’s why it is a huge surprise that their newest album, Hypercaffium Spazzinate, is a hit, debuting this week at 20 on the Albums chart. While they haven’t been together the whole time between Cool and Hypercaffium, they did reunite at times and the fan base has obviously been growing, so much so that, along with their Albums chart debut, they are at the top of the Vinyl Albums, Independent Albums and Tastemaker Albums charts. Quite an accomplishment for a band that’s been around for 39 years.

The Descendents is, really, the only good news for veteran artists this week. Only three albums in the top 50 are from an artist that has been recording for twenty years or more, a low for the year.

The only other debut from a veteran artist for the week doesn’t show up until number 118 with Anyway You Love We Know How You Feel by the Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Robinson, the former singer for the Black Crowes, is now on his fourth album with his new band and it is the first to not debut in the top 100. Their best charting album was 2014’s Phosphorescent Harvest which peaked at 61.
