Dubbed by many festival goers as “the greatest festival in Australian music history”, ATP caused quite a stir when it was here last in 2009. Now Australian fans will get a chance to attend the unique festival once again with The Drones bringing together all of the artists for the 2013 edition.
The incredible lineup will feature My Bloody Valentine, Godspeed, You Black Emperor!, Beasts of Bourbon (original lineup including Tex Perkins, Kim Salmon, Boris Sudjovic, Spencer P Jones and James Baker), Einstuerzende Neubauten, Thee Oh Sees, Lost Animal, Swans, HTRK, Sleepy Suns, Harmony, Standish/Carlyon and Cam Butler and the Shadows of Love and “many more”.
It will be the first time My Bloody Valentine have played in Australia since the Loveless tour in 1992. The band returned to the stage after a brief absence thanks to ATP London in 2008. Since then their shows have gathered nothing but incredible reviews. ATP was also responsible for the reformation of Godspeed, You Black Emperor!, whose post-rock masterpieces are truly cult classics.
Those of you who like their music angular should look no further than Germany’s avant-garde industrial mind fuckers, Einstuerzende Neubauten. In his book Hacienda: How Not To Run A Club, former New Order bassist Peter Hook said of Neubauten’s show in his Manchester club that singer Blixa Bargeld leapt of the stage with a jackhammer in hand and began chiseling away at one of the support beams apparently unphazed by the fact that this part of the act could have killed both the band and the audience.
Two of the finest local acts of the past couple of years: Lost Animal and Harmony have run into each other on festival lineups before. When one of the finest local acts of the last decade is curating, it seems inevitable that it would happen again.
ATP is unique in that an artist helps piece together their fantasy lineup, rather than a promoter whose main interest might be in ticket sales or big ticket acts.
The festival will take place at the Westgate Entertainment Centre and Grand Star Reception in the Melbourne suburb of Altona on February 16 and 17, 2013.
Tickets are on sale Monday, August 13 at 9am from www.atpfestival.com. They will set you back $135 for a single day or $250 for two days.
