Melbourne’s iconic music venue The Espy has a price on its head. The Esplanade Hotel, aka The Espy is for sale.
The Espy is Australia’s longest running continuous live music venue.
The Esplanade Hotel was built in 1878 at 11 Upper Esplanade, St Kilda and overlooks the St Kilda Pier.
Only last weekend the venue played host to Australian supergroup The Dead Daisies. John Farnham once played a Sunday afternoon show at the venue to launch his ‘The Last Time’ album.
Paul Kelly also recorded his live album ‘Live At The Continental And the Esplanade’ in the Gershwin Room of The Espy.
The Gershwin Room has also been the home of the filming of the TV show Rockwiz since 2005.
Over the years big names from around Australia and world have performed at the venue including Jet, Icehouse, Public Enemy, Jurassic 5, Wolfmother and De La Soul.
Over the centuries the Esplanade Hotel has had its share of famous visitors including American author Mark Twain in the 1880s and Sarah Bernhardt in 1920.
The future of The Espy as a live music venue will be determined once new owners take over. Until then, it is business as usual.
