The Flaming Lips will release their new album ‘The Terror’ in April.
The Flaming Lips long-time co-producer Dave Fridmann recorded the album at his Tarbox Road Studios. Fridmann has been working with The Flaming Lips since their 1990 debut album and is also the long-time producer of Mercury Rev.
Lips singer Wayne Coyne describes ‘The Terror’ as “bleak” and disturbing”. “Why would we make this music that is The Terror – this bleak, disturbing record? I don’t really want to know the answer that I think is coming. Maybe this is the beginning of the answer,” he said in a statement.
2013 marks the 30th year of The Flaming Lips. Wayne Coyne formed the band in Oklahoma City in 1983 with his brother Mark as lead singer. Mark left the band in 1985 after releasing just one E.P.. Wayne assumed lead vocals after Mark’s departure.
Co-founder Michael Ivins on bass is the only other original member of the band.
Fridman recorded The Flaming Lips debut album at the State University of New York in Fredonia on a $10,000 budget and a fee of $5 per hour. We assume his hourly rate is a little higher than that these days.
‘The Terror’ will be released in the USA on April 2.
