The Grateful Dead opened their three-night Fare Thee Well stint at Soldier’s Field on Friday night with a show that, except for one song, was firmly set in the 70’s.

Last week’s shows in Santa Clara, CA appeared to have a defining line with night one being almost exclusively 60’s and night 2 in the 70’s. Chicago night one continued the 70’s theme with only New Potato Caboose, from 1968’s Anthem of the Sun, the one hold out.

In addition, no music was repeated from night two in Santa Clara, showing the depth of the band’s 70’s catalog. The 1975 album Blues For Allah was featured the most prominently closing out both main sets.
