The original Morty Seinfeild Phil Bruns has died in Los Angeles at the age of 80.

Bruns played Jerry Seinfeld’s dad in the first season of Seinfeld but was replaced by Barney Martin from Season 2 and the remainder of the show. (Martin died in 2005).
In the 70s, Bruns played George Shumway, the father of Mary Hartman in the comedy ‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman’.
He has also appeared in the TV shows Columbo, Night Court, Just Shoot Me and M*A*S*H and movies ‘Flashdance, The Great Waldo Peppers and Harry and Tonto.
Bruns is survived by his wife, Broadway musical star Laurie Franks.
A statement at the Seinfeld Facebook page reads, Today we would like to remember actor Phil Burns, your original portrayal of Morty Seinfeld will always be remembered.
