Australian rock legend Jim Keays used to spend his spare time painting.
On tour he would paint what was outside the hotel room. On holiday he would paint what he saw during his stay. On tour he would capture the moment before or after a show. Jim was a prolific painter but it wasn’t until after his death two years ago many discovered his hidden talent.
Jim lost his battle with cancer in June 2014. Despite his numerous works of art, Jim had never displayed or sold his work because, according to his wife Karin, “he didn’t think they were very good”.
Actually they are.
The paintings of Jim Keays capture his moments and give us a glimpse of his lifestyle. The man who could be a ferocious singer belting out ‘Turn Up Your Radio’ was also an exceptional artiste and hardly anyone knew it until now.
The Secret Life of Rock Legend Jim Keays 1946-2014 is on display at the Hawthorn Studio and Gallery until August 6.
