Noise11 hears that The Pretty Things will perform one more time and one last time for Australia at The Old Bar in Melbourne tonight. The show will be a benefit for Norton Records.
The Pretty Things features original members Phil May and Dick Taylor. Dick was an original member of The Rolling Stones, leaving in late 1963 to make way for Bill Wyman to join the band. Phil was one of David Bowie’s biggest influences. Van Morrison once said that the only difference between David Bowie and Phil May was the clothes.
Bowie brought a new audience to The Pretty Things when he covered their ‘Rosalyn’ and ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ for his Pin-Ups album. He also wrote the song ‘Oh You Pretty Things’, inspired by the band.
Phil and Dick told Noise11 earlier this week that Bowie was a year behind them at school and was often in the audience at their early gigs.
A special treat last night was the special guest appearance of original member John Stax who joined them for ‘Rosalyn’. Stax left the band in 1967 and moved to Australia. He now lives in Melbourne.
If you have so far missed The Pretty Things and you are in Melbourne tonight (December 15, 2013) make sure you see this legendary band at The Old Bar, at 74 Johnston St, Fitzroy. The line-up will also feature Midnight Woolf, Mesa Cosa, The Reprobettes and the excellent Wrong Turn kicking things off at 8:30. Entry $10.
