Melbourne’s revered theatre company The Production Company has launched its 2019 season with two Australian premieres (including David Bowie’s last work) and an all time classic.

The Production Company 2019 line-up features ‘Lazarus’, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ and ‘Ragtime’.

Jeanne Pratt AC announced the 2019 line-up from the grounds of her residence Raheen stating, “The premiere of David Bowie and Enda Walsh’s music theatre masterpiece, Lazarus, will open our season. It’s a great pleasure and an honour for The Production Company to be staging David Bowie’s final masterpiece with an outstanding creative team headed by acclaimed director Michael Kantor.”

The Production Company will also stage the theatre classic Thoroughly Modern Millie and the Australian premiere of Ragtime.

“We couldn’t have done this for the past thirty years without our loving musical audiences. Thank you, Melbourne,” Jeanne added.

Lazarus features the songs of David Bowie. The original production was first staged in New York in 2015. Bowie co-wrote Lazarus with Once writer Enda Walsh. It follows a previous Bowie work The Man Who Fell To Earth and continues to tell the story of alien Thomas Newton as he continues his Earthly presence, unable to die.

Bowie wrote new songs for the musical and used many of his classics including ‘Changes’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Absolute Beginners’. Chris Ryan will star as Newton.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is set in the 1920s. It is a story about small-town girl Millie Dillmount who arrives in New York City to make her dreams come true. Annie Aitken will star as Millie, Marina Prior as landlady Mrs Meers.

Ragtime is also set in New York. It studies the dynamics of different cultures in a big city. Kurt Kansley will star as Coalhouse Walker, Jr, Chloe Zuel is Sarah and Josh Piterman is Tateh.

The Production Company 2019 dates

Lazarus at the Playhouse 18 May – 9 June
Thoroughly Modern Millie at the State Theatre, 3 August to 11 August
Ragtime at the State Theatre 2 November to 10 November
