The Replacements have been allowed back on NBC after a 28-year ban.
The last time the Replacements played on NBC it was January 18, 1986 on Saturday Night Live. They showed up drunk, could be seen swearing on camera, dropped their instrument, ran into each other and, generally, didn’t give their best performance. Lorne Michaels banned them from the show.
The group will return to NBC on Tuesday night when they play Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show. Granted, they were broken up from 1991 to 2011, so the length of time they’ve been missing from the network isn’t quite as impressive as it would seem, but Lorne Michael’s is now the executive producer of The Tonight Show so it’s obvious his stance on the band has softened up a bit.
Here’s a promo the Replacements put together for their appearance:
The full announcement from Paul Westerberg’s site:
DVR RED ALERT! The Replacements are appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday Sept. 9, 2014. The band’s last appearance on NBC was in 1986, after which they were reportedly banned from SNL because of their drunken antics. They did two songs on that SNL appearance, “Bastards of Young” and “Kiss Me On The Bus”. If my memory of Mats lore serves me, Bob is wearing Paul’s wife’s jump suit…it’s a wee bit small on him. Paul was on again in 1993 and Josh Freese and Dave Minehan were playing with him for that appearance, as they will be on Fallon.
Great news, right? Oh yeah, it is but WAIT, there’s more. Who are Jimmy’s other guests that night? Keith Richards and Debra Messing. I know! The Mats and Debra Messing on the same show, can you believe it??
If you are in reasonable proximity to NYC and for some unfathomable reason have not yet purchased your tickets to the Forest Hills show, I’d do that now, before the Fallon show airs, because I have a feeling whatever tickets remain will get snapped up after that.
