The Rolling Stones will release the rare Spanish edition of the Sticky Fingers album worldwide, 44 years after the original release of the album.
The original cover for ‘Sticky Fingers’ featuring the Andy Warhol artwork was originally banned in Spain. (Australia, don’t laugh to loud. The UK and USA cover featuring the zip was also banned by at the time by the conservative Australian Liberal government).
Spain, unlike Australia, had a completely different cover issued. Australia was allowed to use the photo of the artwork but without the zipable zip. Australia’s Prime Minister at the time was the conservative William McMahon, whose son Julian went on to become a successful actor in the USA in the TV series Nip/Tuck and the Fantastic Four movies.
Spain’s leader then was General Franco who banned the original Sticky Fingers cover. The Stones commissioned John Pasche (who designed the first tongue logo), and Phil Jude (who later photographed the goat’s head for the inner sleeve of Goats Head Soup) to create alternative cover artwork.
The limited edition Spanish edition of Sticky Fingers will be released on 15 June, 2015. It is available to order exclusively from the Rolling Stones website.
