The Who will have a new album for 2019, their first since ‘Endless Wire’ in 2006.
Pete Townshend told Rolling Stone that he and Roger Daltrey decided to make a new album to have new music on the road when they tour throughout this year.
“I said I was not going to sign any contracts unless we have new material,” Townshend told Rolling Stone. “This has nothing to do with wanting a hit album. It has nothing to do with the fact that the Who need a new album. It’s purely personal. It’s about my pride, my sense of self-worth and self-dignity as a writer.”
The 2019 symphonic US tour will start May and play for 29 dates. The Who will choose a local orchestra to perform with them along the tour.
At The Who.com Pete said, “The Who will be back in action this year, with new recorded music, a new stage show (with absolutely no water drenching effects, lol), but some very special events. I’ve suggested we might do a special series of shows for our close fans towards the end of 2019; we shall see, plenty of time to work things out. More details to come soon, but it will certainly be an exciting year for us and it will kick off sooner than you expect. The Who’s managers, with Roger and I, are still planning things, but we’re all committed to a new WHO year ahead”.
Townshend also praised current music saying, “Unlike a lot of people of my age I love a lot of trance as well as hip hop and rap”.
He went on to add, “my favourite new music in 2018 was from Thundercat, Sia, The Internet (that’s the name of the band), Kendrick Lamar, Jaakko Kuusisto (Violin Concerto), The Hillbenders (new album this year). Best guitar music for me came from Gordon Giltrap”.
The first date of the symphonic US tour is 7 May in Grand Rapids.
