There is definitely something funny about the music of Stephen Lynch. Lynch says fans should expect “musical comedy” when he tours Australia later this month.
“It’s all musical comedy,” he tells Noise11.com. “I will have a setlist of 20 or 25 songs which I and my friends will perform. There are comedy songs and some other things. We’ll chat in between the songs which will hopefully be entertaining for the audience as well. It’s really a music show. I won’t be doing any traditional stand-up”.
Lynch has appeared in a number of Comedy Central Presents shows and has starred on Broadway in ‘The Wedding Singer’.
He says he first found out he was funny when strangers started laughing at his shows. “An old friend asked me to play in a little cabaret theatre he had in midtown Manhattan and play some of the songs I had written,” he says. “Strangers were laughing. It wasn’t just my high friends. I thought maybe there is something to this. That was when I worked out funny songwriting was something I should try and maybe concentrate on”.
The Australian shows will be his first locally to showcase his most recent album ‘Lion’. “It will certainly be featured because it’s the newest material and it’s the freshest and most fun for me to perform and quite frankly I think it’s the funniest album,” he says. “It will be a lot of songs from the new record and then just to keep the people from rioting I will play some older material as well because I know they’ll want to hear some of their favourites”.
Stephen Lynch will perform in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne for Adrian Bohm Presents.
Dates are:
August 20, Sydney, Enmore Theatre
August 21, Brisbane, The Tivoli
August 22, Melbourne, Athenaeum Theatre
