Thomas Dolby will tell his story about music and technology in his upcoming autobiography “The Speed of Sound: Breaking the Barriers Between Music and Technology”.
Dolby is equal parts musician and entrepreneur. Many know him for ‘She Blinded Me With Science’ and ‘Hyperactive’ but Dolby has been an entrepreneur as long as he has been a professional musician. “I’ve always been a tinkerer. Never happier than when I’m scratching around without a clue, whether it’s programming a MiniMoog or filing for a $90M IPO. Now that most of the characters in my life story are either dead or in jail, I felt it’s time to spill the beans.”
One of Dolby’s first companies was Beatnik, which specializes in software synthesizers for mobile phones. He then became a pioneer in ringtone technology.
Apart from his own records he has also worked on albums for Foreigner (4), Def Leppard (Pyromania) and Malcolm McLaren (Duck Rock). He also produced three albums for Prefab Sprout including their biggest release ‘Steve McQueen).
Thomas Dolby’s book ‘The Speed of Sound: Breaking The Barriers Between Music and Technology’ will be available from October 11 through Flatiron Books.
