The Spice Girls have reportedly recorded a new single.
The trimmed down group – which now consists of Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton and Geri Horner, or GEM as they dubbed themselves in their recent video announcement – have penned the new song to celebrate 20 years since the release of debut hit single, Wannabe.
It will be the first Spice Girls song for nine years since song Headlines, but it won’t feature former group members Mel C or Victoria Beckham – who have declined to return for another dose of nostalgia.
According to The Sun, the track is called Song For Her, and features the lyrics: “Wipe up your tears of doubt you have been crying, lift up your dreams feel like you’re flying, never forget the girl is the woman you are.”
A source told the British newspaper: “It’s a Spice Girls song through and through and it’s something millions of their fans will be able to relate to, having grown up with them.
“You can guarantee as soon as it’s released they will be back at the top of the charts where they belong, with or without Mel C or Victoria.”
On Wednesday it was reported that songwriter and producer Eliot Kennedy, who penned the legendary girl group’s 1996 chart topper Say You’ll Be There, has been helping Geri, Melanie and Emma work on new music; however, the musician’s laptop computer was stolen from the K West Hotel in London, resulting in Eliot taking to Twitter send a foul mouthed message to the thief.
“To the thieving b**tard that stole my equipment. It must really suck that my laptop and iPad are encrypted and worthless,” he added in another post on the social media site.
The episode is just the latest mishap for the Spice Girls ahead of their planned reunion. The girls were also forced to delay plans for a reunion tour, which was originally planned to coincide with the 20th anniversary of their 1996 rise to the top of the charts, due to being unable to book their desired venues.
Instead, they are now rumoured to be planning a major concert in London’s Hyde Park in July next year, although the plans are yet to be formally confirmed.
