Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ album Greatest Hits has been awarded two more RIAA certifications for 11 and 12-times-platinum indicating total sales of over 12 million units.
The certification ties the album at number 40 on the RIAA’s list of biggest selling albums ever with such titles as the Beatles’ Abbey Road, the Rolling Stones’ Hot Rocks, Led Zeppelin II, Def Leppard’s Hysteria and the Dixie Chicks’ Wide Open Spaces.
Greatest Hits is, by far, Petty’s biggest selling album. Full Moon Fever is in second with 5 million units sold. Overall, Petty is credited by the RIAA with sales of a total of 20 million albums.
Two other hits collections are the only other albums to receive gold or platinum certification in the last three months. Both Ice Cube’s Greatest Hits and Rob Zombie’s Best of: 20th Century Masters went gold, indicating sales of over 500,000 copies.
In singles, Jay Z received two-times platinum, platinum and gold certificates while Christian group the Newsboys received a platinum.
