Tom Waits has written and performed a song for David Letterman.
Waits performed ‘Take One Last Look’, a song he wrote to mark the retirement of Letterman from his iconic late night show this week.
“Let’s watch the sun come up in another town / Try our luck a little further down / Leave the cards on the table, leave the bread on the plate / Put your hand on the gearshift, let your foot of the brake / And take one last long / At the place that you are leaving,” Waits sang.
Before the performance, Waits had am hilarious interview with Letterman, who was handcuffed to George Clooney. During the interview Waits said he was thinking of producing a deodorant called ‘New Car Smell’ and for the retired and unemployed a perspirant called ‘Hard Work’, so they can smell like they have actually been working.
Tom Waits first appeared on the Letterman show on December 21, 1983.
Letterman’s last show on May 20 will feature a performance by Eddie Vedder.
