88-year old Tony Bennett could replace 72-year old Barbra Streisand with the number one album in the USA this week.
In one of the closest three-way races of the year for the number 1 spot in the U.S., it looks like Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga may have just pulled out the win, but it’s close enough that nothing is for sure.
Hits Daily Double projects that Cheek-to-Cheek sold just over 131,000 copies last week with Kenny Chesney’s The Big Revival 1,600 behind and Barbra Streisand’s Partners behind by about 3,000. As the projection is based on a sampling of the retailers used for Billboard’s charts, the positions could change with just a slight variation in sales.
If it holds, it will be only the second chart topping album of Tony Bennett’s career after 2011’s Duets II. It would be Gaga’s third.
Streisand should also be happy with the performance of her album. With only a 35% drop in the second week, it is doing better than most releases that fall 40% to 60% in week two.
Of the other veteran artists with new albums, Leonard Cohen’s Popular Problems is pointing towards sales of around 23,000, putting him in the high teens while John Mellencamp’s Plain Spoken moved an estimated 20,000 for a debut in the mid-teens. Lenny Kravitz’ Strut is behind by a couple of more places with estimated sales of 19,000. Finally, Aphex Twin looks to start around number 30 with Syro on sales of 10,000 to 11,000.
