After 60 years and more than 70 albums, Tony Bennett is poised to have his first number 1 album. According to Hits Daily Double, Duets II will sell between 160 and 170,000 copies outdistancing Lady Antebellum who will move 140 to 150,000 copies of their album which is in its second week of release.
At 85, Bennett already has set the record for the oldest artist to reach the Billboard Hot 100 which he did last week on his duet with Amy Winehouse on Body and Soul. Now, Duets II will also make him the oldest artist to ever score a number 1 album.
Bennett’s career started in 1950 when he was signed to Columbia Records by Mitch Miller and had his first big hit the next year with Because of You. The record reached number 1 on the singles chart, a mark that Tony would hit two more times withCold, Cold Heart (1951) and Rags to Riches (1953).
The album chart was a different story. Over the years, he only had four albums reach the top ten, I Left My Heart in San Francisco (1962/#5), I Wanna Be Around… (1968/#5), Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album (1968/#10) and Duets: An American Classic (2006/#3).
Duets II includes Bennett singing with the likes of Lady Gaga, John Mayer, Amy Winehouse, Michael Buble, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Carrie Underwood and many more.
Other veteran artists who will do well on next week’s album chart are George Strait who is on the cusp of making the top ten for a third week with Having a Good Time, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beatles who will be towards the bottom of the top 20.
