Toshi Seeger, the wife of folk legend Pete Seeger, has died at the age of 91.
Pete married Toshi-Aline Ota on July 20, 1943. They were nine days away from celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. The Seegers had four children. She was considered an essential part of Seeger’s work.
Toshi was an activist and filmmaker. Her 1966 film ‘Afro-American Work Songs In A Texas Prison’ was a movie about prisoners chopping trees and singing their traditional songs. It is now available through the Library of Congress archives.
Pete Seeger is 94. He composed some of the great songs of our time including ‘If I Had A Hammer’, ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone’ and ‘Turn Turn Turn’.
Pete Seeger was a major influence on Bob Dylan. He encouraged John Hammond to produce Dylan’s first album and then put Dylan on the Newport Jazz Festival where he made his name.
