U2 have always been politically active, so it is no surprise that the video for their track “Get Out Of Your Own Way” is filled with images of the current political climate.
Shot using different forms of animation, the video includes multiple images of the Ku Klux Klan including one shot of Donald Trump in the Oval Office with the Klan marching behind him.
The lyrics sends a very strong message to the American demagogue:
Fight back
Don’t take it lyin’ down, you got to bite back
The face of liberty’s starting to crack
She had a plan up until she got smacked in the mouth
And it all went south
Like freedom
The slaves are lookin’ for someone to lead them
The master’s lookin’ for someone to need him
The promised land is there for those who need it most
The track, from the album Songs of Experience, was animated by Israeli graffiti group Broken Fingaz Crew, who said “2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Trump and other world leaders who use people’s fear to build more walls and segregation. The song is both a personal letter and a clarion cry to the global situation, and in the same way, we’ve combined our psychedelic pop style with political imagery; shot entirely analogue, using paper cut and stop motion animation techniques.”
