U2’s spam stunt has hurt US sales.
‘Songs of Innocence’, the U2 album forced on people whether they were fans or not, is looking like selling around 20,000 copies in America in the first week which likely means it will debut outside the Top 10.
The previous U2 album, 2009’s ‘No Line On The Horizon’, sold 484,000 copies in the first week and to date has sold over 1.3 million in America.
U2 hold the record for the biggest grossing tour of all-time after generating $736,421,586 in ticket sales from the 110 show across seven legs of the 360 Degrees tour of 2009-2011.
You have to go all the way back to 1984 for the last U2 album to not go Top 10 in the USA. ‘The Unforgettable Fire’ peaked at no. 13. The only U2 album since then not to reach number one was ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ which peaked at no. 3 but still managed to sell 3,000,000 copies in America and 9,000,000 worldwide.
‘Songs Of Innocence’ debuted at no. 7 in Australia last weekend with 2860 sales.
The U2 album also had a luke-warm debut in the UK debuting at no. 6.
