Dame Vera Lynn this week made Official Chart history by becoming the oldest living artist to have a Top 20 record.
Her new collection, ‘Vera Lynn: National Treasure’, out this week on Decca, reaches No. 13 in the UK’s Official Album Chart.
At the age of 97, The Forces’ Sweetheart breaks all records as she, once again, overtakes the pop acts of today including Pharrell, 50 Cent & One Direction, with songs that were recorded over seven decades ago for Decca.
Dame Vera said of her chart success ‘I am delighted of course! It is wonderful to hear these songs again that were at the top of the charts so long ago, and it’s warming to think that everyone else is listening to them too’.
The release of the singer’s new collection marks the 70th anniversary of the World War II D-Day landings this weekend. It was Dame Vera who kept up the spirits of millions with her songs and personality during the darkest days of the Second World War.
This year Dame Vera Lynn celebrated 90 years in show business, having made her first professional performance at the age of 7. She has already become the First British Artist to Top the US Charts (1952), the First (and only) Artist over 90 to Top UK Album Charts (2009) and today she became the oldest living artist to have a top 20 album (2014).
