Vika Bull will become Etta James for ‘At Last: The Etta James Story’, premiering next February in Melbourne.
Room 8 Productions, the company behind ‘Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons’, is bringing The Etta James Story to the stage.
For Vika Bull, it is the chance to sing the songs of someone she has always admired. “Etta James has had a huge influence on my musical journey. Someone played her record to me when I had just started performing, and from then on I was hooked. She had a voice so powerful it could knock you over, and I just love her sassy cheekiness on stage!” says Ms Bull.
Like Jordie Lane in The Legend Of Gram Parsons, Vika Bull will also narrate the story of Etta James, telling a tale of her tough upbringing, recurring drug problems and time in prison and rehab.
The show will feature an 8-piece R&B band.
Etta James was born in 1938 and died in January this year. Her legacy includes the classic ‘At Last’ as well as ‘Roll With Me’, ‘Tell Mama’ and ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’.
Tickets for the show will go on sale on November 30, 2012 at Ticketek.
‘At Last: The Story of Etta James’ is on at the Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne from February 19 – March 3.
