The Village People’s YMCA has become a standard at professional sporting events around the country but it won’t be heard anymore at L.A. Clippers games.
Former member Victor Willis, who is in charge of the group’s catalog, has Tweeted that the club and, especially its owner, Donald Sterling, are not allowed to use the song anymore. Sterling became embroiled in controversy over this past weekend when an audio tape, purported to contain Sterling’s voice uttering numerous racist comments, went public. Members of the Clippers basketball team showed their own disgust on Sunday by taking off their jerseys with the team’s logo and throwing them in the middle of the court.
Willis’ Twitter comment:
Sterling, you’re banned from playing “Y.M.C.A.” or any of my music @LAClippers games. And I mean it! #Clippers #BoycottClippers
Reps for the songwriter told TMZ that Willis is serious and will take legal action, if needed.
