When Canadian metal band Voivod perform in Australia in January for David Roy Williams, it will be heading towards 19 years since their last Australian shows.
Voivod have an amazing history. For starters, this was the band Jason Newsted joined after his sudden departure from Metallica in 2001. Newsted was a member of Voivod from 2002-2008 and played on the albums ‘Voivod’ (2003) and ‘Katorz’ (2006).
Newsted is now an artist (painter) who displays his work at exhibitions. “VOIVOD are one of the most underrated and unrecognized outfits in metal. You know it and I know it. They really deserve the recognition from this generation of metal music lovers who don’t quite know about VOIVOD and their incredible influence throughout the years,” he said.
Voivod have released 14 albums, most recently ‘The Wake’ in September 2018.
Voivid formed in 1982. Original singer Denis Bélanger (Snake) and drummer Michel Langevin (Away) are still members of the band. Original guitarist Denis D’Amour (Piggy) died in 2005. The original bass player Jean-Yves Thériault (Blacky) rejoined in 2008 replacing Newsted (Jasonic) but left again in 2014. The current bass player is Dominique Laroche.
