NBC has aired a live concert version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.
The production was a major hit with almost ten million people watching. Starring John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Alice Cooper and a host of Broadway performers, the opera tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus’ life.
The NBC production, the first for the network in their musical theater series performed before a live audience, used a mix of older and modern elements, full orchestra, chorus and troop of dancers.
Late in the show, Pontius Pilate sends the arrested Christ to see King Herod, hoping he will decide his fate. “King Herod’s Song” is written in a vaudevillian honky-tonk style which was perfectly portrayed by Alice Cooper.
