Dave Grohl decided to perform at the Academy Awards so his daughter wouldn’t think he’s a “big wimp”.

The Foo Fighters frontman attended the Oscars for the first time on Sunday night, gracing the red carpet with his wife Jordyn Blum. When quizzed beforehand whether this set would be one of the biggest of his career, Dave admitted he felt pressure in the lead up.

“Maybe, perhaps,” he replied to ABC. “It’s funny because the reason I’m doing this tonight is because when I told my daughter that I was offered to play, she said: ‘Well you’re gonna do it, aren’t you?’ And I said, ‘Well I’m kind of a little nervous.’ And that night I went to sleep and I thought, ‘Well now I have to do it because if I don’t do it, my daughter’s gonna think, like, I’m a big wimp.’ So I’m doing this one for my daughter for sure.”

Dave has three daughters, Violet, nine, Harper, six, and Ophelia, who turns 19 months on Tuesday, with wife Jordyn.

His performance during the ceremony was an emotional one, as he paid tribute to famous names who have passed away over the last 12 months with a rendition of The Beatles’ Blackbird. As he played, clips of stars including musician David Bowie and thespian Alan Rickman were shown in the background.

Those A-listers who tuned in from home shared their praises for Dave on social media. Captain America actor Chris Evans wrote: “Dave Grohl singing blackbird. Amazing,” while KISS rocker Gene Simmons posted: “Dave Grohl’s BLACKBIRD (McCartney) was stunning. Subtle, and beautiful.”

The last award ceremony Dave attended was the Grammys earlier this month, where Foo Fighters were up for two accolades; Best Rock Performance for Something from Nothing and Best Music Film for Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways.

Despite winning neither, the band already has eleven Grammys to its name, along with several NME Awards and MTV Video Music Awards.
