There have been many angry and pointed songs written about Donald Trump over the last year but not many that fall into the realm of “gentle standard”.
Noel Paul Stookey has taken an American classic, Unforgettable, and given it new words to express his displeasure with Trump as president.
Stookey is, of course, Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary and has been an activist for his entire career, singing many of the angry and pointed songs that others have used against the current president but here he has decided to go quietly.
Unforgettable was written by Irving Gordon as Uncomperable in 1951 and originally recorded by Nat King Cole with an arrangement by Nelson Riddle. He rerecorded it in 1961 for the album The Nat King Cole Story.
Cole’s daughter, Natalie, released a new version of the song in 1991 that utilised her late father’s voice in a virtual duet. It went on to win Record of the Year at the 1992 Grammy Awards.
