‘The One That Got Away’ is the 6th single release from the Katy Perry album ‘Teenage Dream’.
After the release of the last single ‘Last Friday Night (TGIF)’ Katy became the first female act to score five number one songs off one album and only the second artist to do so, after Michael Jackson.
If ‘The One That Got Away’ goes to number one Katy will create a new record.
However, the times are a lot different now to when Michael Jackson was releasing ‘Thriller’.
For starters, the ‘Thriller’ days were still in the vinyl era. The singles released from ‘Thriller’ were all 7 inch vinyl. Manufacturing was a lot more expensive then, distribution took time, fans had to physically go into a store to get the record and albums were more popular.
Today, all the Katy Perry songs are downloads and available instantly 24 hours a day. There is no waiting for a release, no driving to a store and album sales are fewer as people can now cherry-pick the songs from an album they wish to own.
Katy may very well on paper beat the Michael Jackson record next week. However, comparing era to era, Jackson’s success was a much more impressive result that someone just downloading six Katy Perry songs.
