Raelyn Nelson, the granddaughter of Country legend Willie Nelson, has knocked out a rowdy rocker with her cowpunk song ‘Mama Cry’ with her Raelyn Nelson Band.
Raelyn wrote the song with her little sister Scout. “Basically, Scout and I wrote this tune after she made our mom cry one day. We hate seeing her cry and started singing ‘Why Why Why…does mama gotta cry cry cry?’ Since Scout recently graduated from college, the verses kinda fell into place as the song takes you through leaving childhood behind and chasing dreams.”
The Raelyn Nelson Band have been touring the USA with Decendents, got a gig with granddad at Willie’s 4th of July Picnic and played their own show at the Whisky A Go Go in LA.
“We did a bunch of recording the first of the year, but our touring schedule made it a little challenging, as far as getting the stuff mixed and mastered,” she said. “We still write, record, and produce everything ourselves, so it’s been a matter of just finding the time to finish it all. When you throw in the music videos we like to make for each of our singles, well…you get the picture. That being said, you can imagine how excited we are to have a new collection of songs finished and ready for people to hear.”
Raelyn will continue to tour with the Raelyn Nelson Band. “I don’t really have any desire to be a ‘solo-artist’,” she says. “Everyone in my family who plays music has always placed a lot of importance on band chemistry, on stage, off stage and in the studio. Our band can almost read each other’s minds. Why would I mess with that? We try to keep it simple: Write songs we like, record them, make a video, then go out and play them for people.”
Raelyn is the daughter of Willie Nelson Jr, Willie’s second child from his first marriage to Martha.
The next gig for the Raelyn Nelson Band is 26 July in West Dundee, Illinois.
