Chicago-born musician and artist Willis Earl Beal certainly has a curious story. After leaving the Army, he left his hometown to move to the desert in Albuquerque where he initially lived on the streets. Upon getting a late shift at a motel, he’d record music on a cheap karaoke machine.

One of his hand-drawn flyers (which read “Call me and I’ll sing you a song. Write to me and I’ll draw you a picture”) appeared in Found Magazine in 2009 and he soon got many requests, and a record deal with XL.

His debut album Acousmatic Sourcery was released early this year and it’s a stark, intimate, lo-fi collection of gospel, blues and folk that’s close and quiet enough to give you chills.

Willis is coming to Australia for the New Year’s festivals of Falls and Southbound, but he’ll also do some solo shows which are set to be very special. Tickets are on sale now from Handsome Tours and the venues. Sample ‘Monotony’ below the tour dates.
