“I try to be sugar and spice, but I’m melancholy and can’t do anything right,” sings Willow Smith in her stunning new single Sugar and Spice, which features a sample from the Radiohead song Codex.
The song is vastly different from her biggest hit Whip My Hair from 2010, which tattooed itself into the brains of millions of people around the world with Crazy Frog effectiveness. Is it a sign of growing up? Well, probably not. She is 12. Still, it’s quite a spectacular performance from a 12-year-old. Her voice sounds like that of a seasoned sultry singer. Chan “Cat Power” Marshall would be envious.
One thing is for sure, it’s certainly cooler than any single her dad Will has released. (Before you say it, no, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air was not cool.)
But don’t take my word for it. Have a listen to Sugar and Spice for yourself:
