Wreckless Eric says the Ian Dury and the Blockheads’ song ‘Clever Trevor’ may have been about him.
Wreckless Eric and Ian Dury started their careers together on the indie new wave label Stiff Records. They were mates. ‘He would always say he wrote the song ‘Clever Trevor’ either about me or for me. He was always changing that. He wouldn’t let anyone get in the way of a good story. I loved Ian”.
‘Clever Trevor’ was on the Ian Dury and the Blockheads 1977 debut ‘New Boots and Panties’.
Wreckless Eric’s debut album also featured an Ian Dury song ‘Rough Kids’. “He wrote that song for the band he was in Kilburn and the High Roads,’ Eric said. “I just used to like that song at the time. But he didn’t write ‘Rough Kids’ for me. I just did it at the time probably because I didn’t have enough songs”.
Eric has never considered himself much of a songwriter. “I never wanted to be a songwriter,” he says. “I live with one of the best songwriters on the planet. She just writes these songs and they are all great. I can’t do that. I have no idea how to make a song but I know how to make records rather than write songs”.
Wreckless Eric will tour Australia and New Zealand for David Roy Williams.
