Yaya DaCosta, a model who originally came to prominence in the third season of America’s Top Model, has been cast to play Whitney Houston in the Lifetime biopic.
After Top Model, DaCosta went into acting with a lengthy stint on the soap All My Children, a seven-episode arc on Ugly Betty, and the films The Kids Are All Right, Tron: Legacy, Shanghai Hotel and Lee Daniels’ The Butler. She has appeared under the DaCosta name and as Yaya Alafia.
The film, tentatively titled Whitney Houston (also listed as Whitney Houston: I Will Always Love You), will be the directorial debut of actress Angela Bassett, herself a veteran of music biopics with her Academy Award nominated turn as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. She also starred in the film Waiting to Exhale with Houston.
Shem Bitterman (Halloween 5, Betty and Coretta) is writing the script while Larry Sanitsky (The Tommyknockers, The Last Don) is producing.
The film will mainly revolve around the tempestuous relationship between Houston and Bobby Brown.
