Once again, Broadway is going to the movies for a “new” show, this time with a country legend and one of television’s hottest actresses.
Coal Miner’s Daughter, the story of Loretta Lynn that won Sissy Spacek an Oscar, will be made into a Broadway musical and Lynn has asked TV’s New Girl Zooey Deschenel to star.
Lynn made the announcement on Thursday night during a concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in a move not unlike her telling the audience at the Grand Ole Opry about the film version back in 1979. Loretta then brought Deschenel on stage to sing the title song.
According to the Tennessean, Lynn told the crowd “I have a friend here tonight. I don’t know if y’all remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out on stage, and she about fainted. We both fainted … There’s a little girl backstage that’s going to do the play of Coal Miner’s Daughter, and I can think she can sing her…self to death! (laughs), I didn’t say it! But she’s great.”
Little else has been announced about the show other than it will be produced by Fox Theatricals and Scott Sanders Productions. Sources say that it won’t conflict with Deschenel’s TV schedule which points toward a possible spring 2013 opening.
Along with her acting career, Deschenel has had a successful recording career with singer M. Ward as She & Him. Their three albums (Volume 1, Volume 2 and A Very She & Him Christmas) all made it into the Billboard Top 100 albums.
