Genre-hopper Bertie Blackman returns with her new album Pope Innocent X and talks art, collaboration, unconventional sounds and more.
Bertie Blackman rightly considers herself an artist who merely works in the medium of music, and her fourth album Pope Innocent X proves it once more — a collection of visual art and poetry married to adventurous sounds not beholden to genre or even traditional instrumentation.
She discusses the genesis of the album working with Francois Tetaz (Gotye, Kimbra) as well as Francis Bacon, unearthing unsettling childhood memories, bringing in guests with strong personalities, and making music with scissors and pot plants.
